THE FIRST TRIMESTER

The one where we can’t quite believe it. The one where we want constant reassurance that we are indeed pregnant, so we pee on many a stick to see that plus sign, as it’s weeks before we get that first symptom. However, so much goes on in your first trimester that is utterly mind blowing, and you think to yourself how incredible it is that your tiny little embryo has already linked its skull and sacrum with a magnificent spine! Wow.

.

The first trimester however is, in my opinion, the most tough. No one offers you a seat on the train as no one can see any signs of a bump, even though this is when you feel most nauseous and vulnerable. The hunger, the thirst, the dizziness, the constant wee! The need to stuff your face full of mini cheddars as soon as you get a wave of nausea come over you as it’s the only way to stop yourself from feeling so sick. The acne, the lack of sleep, the worry and the excitement, and of course…the rapid growth of your baby…and uterus…and placenta….and blood volume!

.

Everything is an absolute whirlwind of emotions and bodily changes that you don’t quite know how to feel. You try and proceed with your daily life as best as you can, but you feel so different now. So responsible for this tiny little human growing inside of you. So far from your normal self but you know you are still in there somewhere, hidden away beneath those surging hormones and tired eyes.

A daytime nap feels like the most incredible thing, even if it’s just a simple doze with other toddlers running around you. Your commute home can be very easily accompanied with a snore but somehow you still manage to wake up just in time for your stop. You’re still totally managing to multitask, a fantastic art of being a woman and something you are going to be an absolute pro at by the time your baby arrives.

.

The end of your first trimester marks the milestone transition of embryo to fetus and is usually accompanied by your first ultrasound scan.
