MY DATING SCAN

Now this is always an exciting time, as well as a nerve wracking one! You so desperately want to see that heartbeat that you almost can’t look at the screen to begin with, but when you see that little flicker in your tiny little human you can relax and breathe again.

.

Our dating scan was really early on. We were unsure if I was 7 weeks or 11 weeks pregnant due to a very odd/short/different period in between this time, and as we were trying for a baby we thought we may be further along than we first thought.

.

However, the sonographer placed our little blueberry at 6wk +4. I was convinced we were at least a week further on than that, so I just remembered to myself that due dates change all the time and after all they are only ‘estimated.’

.

So why do due dates change quite a lot of the time? Simply because you cannot be certain exactly when that winner of a sperm met your egg. Sperm can survive up to 4 days in your vagina anyway before even meeting your egg, so going on dates of when you had sex is not a sure indicator of when your baby will be due.

.

Also, just like babies grow at different rates and sizes once they are born, they also grow at different rates and sizes when they are in utero, so measuring the size of your foetus is not 100% accurate.

.

Take your due date with a pinch of salt. A baby is considered full term between 37-42 weeks. That’s a 5-week window! If your baby’s EDD is July 21st , be in the know that your baby is fully ready to be born from July 1st all the way up to August 4th. Some mums even decide to go past 42 weeks of pregnancy, waiting for their body’s and their babies to go into labour naturally rather than being induced. But that’s a whole other blog post!

.

Note: Our dating scan was all the way back in April.
